Around this time of year, I spend a lot of time reflecting on the previous year and developing goals and disciplines for the New Year. These may include small habits I want to incorporate in my daily routine or working towards big life changes that are necessary for me to create and live the type of life that will bring me true happiness and freedom.
In addition to setting goals and disciplines, I also decide on a personal motto or mantra for the year. A motto or mantra can be your favorite quote, lyric, or verse that you look upon as encouragement or motivation through the year. Because, the truth is, while you may feel a new burst of energy with the New Year, at some point during the year, that energy will fade. That is where your personal motto will come in and remind you of your “why.” Hopefully, this will re-energize you.
My personal motto is a simplified version of a mixture of a few different quotes. For 2016, my personal motto is:
You have the power within you to create the success and happiness you want in your life.
This reminds me that I am in control of my life and my decisions. As I go about the year making decisions, I will reflect on whether on not this decision is helping move me towards the life I want.
I know I have the power within me to change anything about myself or my life that is not contributing to my happiness. Whether it is the type of work I am doing, my environment, my acquaintances or my habits; if it is not contributing towards the vision and goals I have set for the type of future I want, I know I am in control to change it. While the decisions may not always be easy, I know my happiness depends on me. I know I have the power to design and create the life I envision for myself and my family. That is a powerful thing.
